Specific Technique Options for Nasal Surgery
There are several different surgical techniques that can be used to “fix” or operate on, a nose. Many people are dissatisfied with or embarrassed by the appearance of their nose. For those who wish to make a change in the appearance of their nose, rhinoplasty at the Aventura practice of Dr. Michael Storch may be the answer. Many rhinoplasty candidates are unfamiliar with the procedure and unsure of the potential results. For this reason Dr. Storch and our staff at the Storch Plastic Surgery Facility strive to fully educate and inform each of our patients on their options and available procedures. If you decide to undergo the rhinoplasty procedure at our Aventura facility, you should know that there are two basic approaches to nasal surgery, or rhinoplasty: the closed technique and the open technique.
Closed Rhinoplasty
For many reasons, including the reduced risk of visible external scars, Dr. Storch generally prefers the “closed rhinoplasty” approach, rather than the “open rhinoplasty” approach. Dr. Storch feels that the closed rhinoplasty technique, which involves less external cutting, offers a decreased possibility of external visible scarring, while also possibly allowing for faster healing and less post operative swelling. When done properly, carefully, and meticulously, the closed rhinoplasty procedure allows for precise control and intraoperative evaluation, and also allows for excellent subtle modifications of the entire nose and nasal tip. The nostrils are also very important and very carefully considered for every patient. The nostrils are frequently reshaped or reduced to further add to the overall nasal refinement. .The nasal procedures are generally performed under general anesthesia, and frequently performed on an outpatient basis, though recovery at our overnight facility is also available for your convenience.
Open Rhinoplasty
At the Storch Plastic Surgery Facility at the Aventura Medical Center, Dr. Storch prefers to use the closed rhinoplasty technique. However, our goal is to best serve our patients, so very rarely we may suggest doing an open rhinoplasty at our Aventura practice. Open rhinoplasty allows the surgeon to have unobstructed exposure or visualization of the underlying nasal structures during the procedure. The “open” rhinoplasty procedure generally begins by making an incision across the area of the underside of the nose, between the nostrils, known as the columella. The skin on the tip of the nose is then pulled back to allow direct open visualization and manipulation of the internal nasal structures. One of the possible drawbacks to the open rhinoplasty procedure is that the incision underneath the nose may remain visible. The open rhinoplasty can also be associated with increased swelling, and somewhat slower overall healing.
