Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
Platelet Rich Plasma is derived from a patients blood. The blood is typically extracted from the patients vein in the arm and then centrifuged to concentrate the platelets in the plasma. The platelets are then activated for injection and topical use.
Clinical Use Of PRP
Currently the clinical applications vary from orthopedic, podiatric, maxillofacial, burns and cosmetic surgery. The platelets assist in wound healing and tissue regeneration; the effects of the platelet rich plasma have been seen to last up to 6 months.
How Does PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) Work?
The platelets carry granules inside that are released when activated. The granules released by the platelets carry specific proteins such as Angiogenic, Epithelial, Epidermal, Insulin and Vascular derived growth factors and other proteins. After platelet activation there is an initial burst of growth factors happens during the first 10 minutes up to an hour after injection, and then the platelets continue to synthesize and secrete additional proteins for the next 10 days. These growth factors are often absent from non-healing wounds and explain why the addition of the PRP aids healing in chronic wounds. There is also reported less risk of infection, accelerated healing
In other words the platelets in the PRP play in healing the role of the maestro of the orchestra, but they handle more than one symphony in their lifetime and the play a main factor in healing for a prolonged amount of time (some studies suggest up to 6 months).

In the cosmetic and plastic surgery world the applications are for wound healing in chronic wounds and burns. The platelet derived plasma can also help with male pattern baldness, volumizing and tightening of the skin. PRP is a great adjunct to PRP promotes healing after laser resurfacing, and is suggested to help in retaining a larger percentage of fat after fat transfer (grafting).
